be an interesting week ahead. president obama is in henderson nevada where he's practicing for the next couple of days. both the president and mitt romney's camps are trying to lower expectations so that if someone does particularly well, it will be an apparent surprise. we heard over the weekend that mitt romney is working on some hard-hitting one-liners because he has that well-timed sense of humor thing. here's the president in response to that news. >> i know folks in the media are speculating already on who's going to have the best zingers. governor romney is a good debater. >> not so sure if he's a good zinger. the presidential last debate was back in 2008. he and mitt romney have never gone head to head. romney does need a win to make this a game changer. the match-up will be wednesday night in denver and of course, we know that you'll be tuned in right here to current tv tv for all of our pre and post-debate coverage. 83% of respondents to a new abc news poll said they're interested in the debates as well. so yo
. the candidates are hitting the trail strong this week. both mitt romney and president obama will start the day off in virginia. the president then heads to oakland, ohio where early voting is already underway. and romney hosts a rally in st. petersburg, florida this evening. romney's challenge now is to prove that was the real mitt romney we saw at the debates. the confident asserttive romney we saw during the debate is not the romney we have grown used to over the last couple of months. romney has since stood by his 47% statement but now he is rolling it back. here is what he said yesterday. >> it's completely wrong. and i absolutely believe, however, that my life has shown they care about 100%. >> you might think that this new romney is nothing but an act. if you do, you are not alone. here is what the president had to say to a crowd of 30,000 people yesterday in madison, wisconsin. >> i met this very spirited fellow who claims to be mitt romney. but i know it couldn't have been mitt romney because the real mitt romney has been running around the country this past year pr
the governor just said about his own plan? >> obama: well for 18 months he has been running on this tax plan, and now, five weeks before the election he is saying his big bold idea is never mind, and the fact is that if you are lowering the rates the way you describe, governor, then it is not possible to come up with enough deductions and loopholes that only affect high income individuals to avoid either raising the deficit or burdening the middle class. it's math. it's arithmetic. now governor romney and i do share a deep interest in encouraging small business growth. so at the same time that my tax plan has already lowered taxes for 98% of families i also lowered taxes for small businesses 18 times, and what i want to do is continue the tax rates -- the tax cuts that we put into place for small businesses and families but i have said that for incomes over $250,000 a year that we should go back to the rates that we had when bill clinton was president when we created 23 million new jobs, went from deficit to surplus, and created a whole lot of millionaires to boot. a
attacking the president as weak on national security and that they're going to allege that the obama administration had positive intelligence that there was going to be a terrorist attack in libya. is that attack going to work? >> not at all. in fact, what's interesting is in the last week, when the republicans have been doing trial balloons with this attack, the president's advantage on foreign policy has actually increased. in the battleground poll, it increased by a third. over this period in time. the president's credentials on foreign policy are well-established and what's different about the president and mitt romney is the president has a record and he doesn't play politics with foreign policy. and i think that provides a great deal of security to voters. voters also rank the president as ahead of mitt romney on strong leadership. and that strong leadership is highly correlated with the decisive actions he's taken in foreign policy whether it is getting us out of iraq or finding osama bin laden or waiting to
